SCDGA HANDICAP SYSTEM

Adopted: February 16, 2002
Revised: February 22, 2003
Revised: January 7, 2006

Section 1:
The South Carolina Deaf Golfers’ Association Handicap System utilizes the best half (1/2) differentials out of the player’s last total number of rounds up to five (5) rounds. The differential is the difference between the player’s score and the course rating. The system is based on the assumption that every player will endeavor to make the best score he/she can at each hole in every 18-hole round and that this score, modified in accordance with the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) seen below, will be reported for handicap purpose in the SCDGA tournaments. Once the gross score had been adjusted in accordance with ESC, it is posted to the player’s record. The following chart will indicate the number of scores to be used in determining an average differential.

Number of Acceptable Scores
Differential To Be Used
1 to 6
Lowest 1
7 or 8
Lowest 2
9 or 10
Lowest 3

EQUITABLE STROKE ADJUSTMENT FOR HANDICAP PURPOSES

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is the downward adjustment of the individual hole scores for handicap purpose in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential scoring ability. ESC sets a maximum number that the player can post on any hole depending on the player’s Course Handicap. A Handicap Index determined from scores to which ESC had not been applied may not be termed a USGA handicap Index.
Here’s how to apply ESC Procedure:
Convert your USGA Handicap Index to a Course Handicap for the set of tees you are going to play.

Use the chart below to look up the maximum score you can post on any hole based on your Course Handicap.

If you do not complete a hole, write down the score you most likely would have made. If you do not play a hole and do not play a hole under the Rules of Golf, writes down par plus the handicap strokes you would receive on that hole. Such scores should be preceded by an “X.” Do not write down your maximum score for an incomplete hole unless your probable score exceeds your maximum score.

Once your have completed your round, scan your score card to locate any score higher than your maximum score and reduce them to your maximum score. There is no limit to the number of holes you can adjust.

18-Hole Course
Handicap Maximum number You May Post On Any Hole
9 or less
Double Bogey
10 Through 19
7
20 through 29
8
30 through 39
9
40 and Higher

To determine your adjusted score for handicap purposes refer to the above chart to determine the maximum score allowed on any holes. Your adjusted score is entered in the computer.

Example:

Your handicap is 24
Your adjusted score for 18 holes is 108
You scored 9 on two holes

Adjust your gross score of 108 to 106 and record 106 for handicap purposes.

Section 2:
A SCDGA Handicap Index is determined as follows: Subtract the USGA Course Rating from the adjusted gross score, multiply the difference by 113 and divide the result by the slope rating of that course. Round off to the nearest tenth. Select the proper number of lowest differentials to be used (see chart above), total the differentials and divide by the number of differentials used to attain the average. Multiply this result by .96 and delete all the numbers after the tenths digit (do not round off). This figure is a SCGA Handicap Index.

Section 3:
To use a SCDGA Handicap Index to determine the Course Handicap, locate the range in which the index falls on the Course Handicap Table and read from it the Course Handicap. The Course Handicap Table is developed by multiply the SCDGA Handicap Index by the USGA Slope Rating and dividing by 113. The resulting figure is rounded off to the nearest whole number.

Section 4:
For the tournament, the course handicap shall be used at eighty percent (80%) for every individual golfer using SCDGA Handicap Index.
